Meet the BSVES Emergency Veterinarians & Specialists
Jenni Huelsman, DVM
Dr. Huelsman received a degree in biology and neuroscience from Oberlin College. She then went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009. Following graduation, Dr. Huelsman completed a rotating internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City, where she met her spouse.
In Dr. Huelsman’s spare time she enjoys running, Les Mills exercise classes, and pit bulls. She lives in Providence with her spouse; her pit bulls, Sarah Jane, Yorkie, and Louis; as well as two black cats, Junebug and Jitterbug.
Ann Klocke, VMD
Dr. Klocke is originally from the Philadelphia area. She received her undergraduate degree in biochemistry from Georgetown University prior to attending the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation, she completed a rotating internship at VCA South Shore Animal Hospital, located just outside of Boston. Dr. Klocke has a special interest in emergency soft tissue surgery and in the future would like to find time to pursue a certification in acupuncture.
Dr. Klocke divides her time between OSVS and BSVES. When not at work, she spends time with her cat, Thomas, and her Australian cattle dog mix, Pandora, both of whom are rescued pets. She loves to cook and is always trying new recipes. She also enjoys live music, road biking, and traveling.
Lindsey Miller, DVM
Dr. Miller is originally from Massachusetts. She has a bachelor’s degree in biology and graduated from the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 2010. Dr. Miller completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists. After completing her internship, Dr. Miller elected to stay on staff in order to further advance her skills in emergency medicine. Dr. Miller splits her time between OSVS and BSVES.
Her special interests include trauma and critical care medicine. In her spare time, Dr. Miller enjoys cooking, particularly working with locally grown fruits and vegetables. She enjoys traveling, spending time outside, and hiking with her dogs, Jack and Lou, as well as curling up with a good book and her two sweet cats.
Meredith Nelson, DVM
Dr. Nelson grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts. She received her BA in biology from Cornell University, and then worked for three years as a veterinary technician before attending Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine for her DVM. Dr. Nelson participated in a one-year rotating Small Animal Medicine and Surgery Internship at Carolina Veterinary Specialists in Charlotte, North Carolina, before returning to New England in 2011 to take a position at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists.
Her interests include neurology and avian/exotics medicine. In her spare time, Dr. Nelson enjoys snowshoeing, baking, singing, watching classic movies, and spending time with her three orange tabbies and two bearded dragons.
Kristi Thomas, DVM
Hailing originally from the shores of Lake Michigan, Dr. Thomas attended veterinary School at Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine after completing her bachelor’s degree there in zoology. She then went on to complete a small animal emergency and surgery rotating internship at VCA South Shore Animal Hospital just outside of Boston. Dr. Thomas’ primary professional interest is in small animal emergency and critical care medicine, but she enjoys emergency surgery and treating pocket pets as well.
Dr. Thomas enjoys spending her free time with her many pets (two dogs, two cats, two rabbits, and two guinea pigs—all adopted or rescued animals) and also enjoys the outdoors, reading, gardening, cooking, and traveling. She joined the staff at OSVS and BSVES in August 2008.
Shelly Pancoast, DVM
Dr. Pancoast grew up around the corner in Seekonk and Rehoboth, Massachusetts. She received her undergraduate degree from Tufts University before attending Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine. After graduating, she completed a one-year internship at VCA Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center in Norwalk, Connecticut. She then spent two years in general practice both in Connecticut and Boston before going on to complete a specialty combined internship in cardiology and emergency and critical care at Tufts V.E.T.S in Walpole, Massachusetts.
Her professional interests include cardiology, internal medicine, and emergency and critical care. In her free time, Dr. Pancoast enjoys traveling, cooking, running, and spending time with her husband and extended family, including her two cats.
Jessica Van Loon
Dr. Van Loon originally hails from Michigan. She received a bachelor’s degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and then graduated from Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. After veterinary school Dr. Van Loon went on to complete a small animal rotating internship in medicine and surgery at Garden State Veterinary Specialists in New Jersey. Dr. Van Loon enjoyed her time on the east coast and joined OSVS and BSVES on early 2014. Her professional interests include trauma and emergency medicine.
When she is not working, Dr. Van Loon enjoys reading, cooking, gardening, bad movies, and travelling. She loves living near the ocean and shares her home with her best friend, the amazing dog Teddy.
Devon Young, DVM
Dr. Devon Young received her bachelors of music in performance from Ithaca College and bachelors of science in pathobiology and veterinary science from the University of Connecticut. She spent a few years teaching oboe lessons, studying ballet and tap, and working as a veterinary technician in Connecticut before Ithaca lured her back and she completed her veterinary degree at Cornell University. She completed the rotating internship at OSVS and is thrilled to join the ranks of the staff doctors of the Emergency Service, spending time at both OSVS and BSVES. Dr. Young's special interests include exotic pets and dermatology.
Dr. Young still plays the oboe (much to the dismay of her cats, rabbit, and fiancé) and tries to dance whenever possible. She also loves the beach, rock climbing, hiking, pirate museums, and running.
